The Stars Descend on the 2nd LSC Golf Day

A team led by Gordon Strachan won the 2nd LSC Golf Classic at Centurion GC yesterday, narrowly pipping Ray Clemence's and Paul Walsh's teams in a three-way tie. Strachan, the former Scotland and Celtic manager who starred as a player for Aberdeen, Manchester United and Leeds, made a huge effort to travel down early from Scotland and was rewarded with another trophy to add to his impressive footballing haul. Other teams were led by Clemence, the former Liverpool, Spurs and England goalkeeper, former England cricketers Monty Panesar and Gladstone Small, former 400m relay world champion Derek Redmond, Olympic badminton silver medallist and former world champion Gail Emms, plus former football stars Paul Walsh (Liverpool, Man City, Spurs), Paul Miller (Spurs, Bournemouth) and Don Goodman (Wolves, Sunderland, Bradford).
The 40 players also took on the 8-time Ryder Cup player and former European Ryder Cup-winning captain Sam Torrance on the par 3, 5th hole, with two members - Mark Hooper and Placid Gonzales - beating Sam. The day began after breakfast with a trick shot show from Kevin Carpenter aided by former world champion Geoff Swain and ended with a 3-course dinner cooked by the Michelin 2-starred Galvin brothers.
Ray Clemence won straightest drive, Tom Greenhalgh (playing in Paul Miller's team) won nearest the pin and the other members of Strachan's cup-winning team were LSC members Chris Clarke and Steve Thornton plus guest Max Lewinsohn.

Money was also raised for Sportaid via a silent auction courtesy of LSC member Alan Lambert and Carita Services.
